A few months ago, a friend sent me a link to an NPR Music podcast episode about identifying the defining Millennial song. Of course, no single song can define an entire group of people born within a 15-year span, but I really enjoyed pondering what...
Most "AI in BI" demos follow the same script. Someone types a question into a chat box, a paragraph marquees back, and everyone nods. It looks impressive for about 30 seconds, until someone asks so what or what happens next. I wanted to build something different...
As part of my ongoing obsession with data modeling (and my day job) I have continued to dive further into Sigma Data Model functionality. In a recent exploration of feature parity between Sigma Data Models and Snowflake Semantic Views (a topic for another day), I...
Documentation is for machines now. Understanding is for people later. Albert Einstein famously said, "Never memorize something that you can look up in a book." For years, we've used this as a high-minded excuse to justify our own procrastination. Why bother learning the syntax when (insert...
TL;DR: Everyone has/is/does "AI." Governance is the biggest topic. BI 2.0 is no longer interesting. Two weeks ago, I spent a day-and-a-half at the BigDataLDN (BDL) conference in London to get the temperature of the technology and sentiment of the data world. BDL is one of...
Implementation tricks and practical advice for restricting rows and protecting columns with user attributes. The first part of this series covered the fundamentals: What row-level security (RLS) and column-level security (CLS) are in Sigma, where each one is configured, and how a basic rule is written....
It's officially autumn around the InterWorks headquarters! The days grow shorter, the weather cooler and the leaves more colorful around our neck of the woods. You'll hear no complaints from us on that front. Nor will you hear any complaints from us about our blog...
A practical guide to restricting rows, protecting columns and enforcing both. Sigma gives you two complementary tools for controlling who sees what in your data: Row-level security (RLS), which controls which rows a user can see, and column-level security (CLS), which controls which columns a user...

A B2B order fulfillment scenario. It's common to build implementations around transactional systems: an application writing new records into a database, an event triggering an orchestration step or a stream of individual transactions landing somewhere to be processed being common examples of it. A question that...
Data Analysis questions are among the most common questions I see from clients on the Assist desk. Now that AI has entered the chat, so to speak, I get a lot of questions about using AI to analyze, clean and work with data to make...
Analytics teams have spent years bringing software-engineering discipline to the data warehouse: version control, code review, CI, automated tests. The layer that has stubbornly resisted that treatment is the presentation layer, the dashboards and reports themselves. They tend to live as opaque objects inside a...
Honestly, if you asked me when my story started, I'd say it started when I was born. But if we're being reasonable about it, the real answer is pre-K, playing Command & Conquer with my dad on our home PC. That's one of my earliest memories,...
