In my earlier article highlighting the new features of Tableau 2019.3, I touched very briefly on Tableau Catalog. I’ll spend a bit more time in a deep dive on it.
Tableau Catalog
The Tableau Catalog is part of the Data Management Add-on (bundled with Tableau Prep Conductor). This add-on is an incremental 5.50 USD per server user (or a fixed cost for capacity-based pricing). Keep in mind that the Server Management Add-on is a different suite of tools and has its own separate pricing.
The Tableau Catalog is designed to offer automated documentation around your data lineage and how your users are using it inside of your Tableau environment. InterWorks built something similar in use case with our Power Tools for Tableau Desktop Datasource Audit tool, though the functionality and method between the two tools are completely different.
Let’s take a look at the actual functionality in the form of a free demo environment available on Tableau.com:
As you can see, there are a lot of very useful features, including the ability to create and manage metadata around your data sources and fields. Much of Tableau’s focus is on the automation of foundational components of your Tableau environment. Building your data dictionary and data lineage is now easy, meaning that proper governance across your Tableau user community does not require nearly as much effort.
Massive win for all clients, commercial up to enterprise.
