Tableau Cloud Migration and Snowflake Data Re-Platforming for Multinational Automotive Supplier

The Situation

A multinational automotive supplier operating across 28 European markets with multiple regional subsidiaries required consolidation of fragmented Tableau Server instances onto a cloud-based platform. The organization was undertaking a strategic shift to reduce reliance on internal IT infrastructure and management overhead for business intelligence tooling. Key challenges included:

  • Multiple separate Tableau Server estates across different regional operating entities requiring consolidation
  • Denormalized SAP cube-based data sources that are incompatible with Tableau Cloud connectivity, even with Bridge
  • Complex multi-party delivery structure involving regional IT infrastructure providers, central IT, and regional business units across multiple countries

What We Did

We delivered a phased Tableau Cloud migration while simultaneously re-platforming incompatible cube-based data sources into Snowflake to enable the full consolidation.

  • Conducted Tableau Cloud Migration Assessment across two major regions, identifying which content could migrate cleanly and flagging denormalized cube-based data sources as non-viable on the cloud platform.
  • Executed physical migration with pre-flight checks and intensive two-to-three-calls-per-week engagement cadence for testing, validation, and user onboarding. Consolidated separate regional Tableau Server instances into unified Tableau Cloud environment and enabled client self-managed user licensing.
  • Built parallel data re-platforming workstream: replicated SAP cube-based data into Snowflake, rebuilt underlying cube logic in dbt Cloud, and repointed four in-scope workbooks to new Snowflake-backed sources with automated scheduled refreshes.

Results

Migrated all regional Tableau instances to Tableau Cloud within client's deadline with the Tableau Cloud Migration workstream. Consolidated fragmented Tableau Server estates, eliminated the need for large-scale internal infrastructure, and successfully re-platformed four denormalized cube-based workbooks onto Snowflake-backed sources with automated refresh cycles.

Team

The following roles were involved in this project:

  • Principal Lead Consultant: Directed migration execution, architecture review, and cross-regional stakeholder alignment. Owned QBR planning and forward roadmap discussions with C-suite and regional leadership.
  • Solutions Architect: Led the Tableau Cloud Migration assessment and physical platform delivery. Managed scope documentation, communications with regional IT teams, and go-live coordination across markets.
  • Data and Analytics Engineer: Owned Snowflake implementation and dbt transformation design. Rebuilt SAP cube logic in a maintainable, scalable format and managed the parallel data migration to ensure workbook repointing was completed without user impact.
