Snowflake Rapid Start and Multi-Client Cost Allocation for Risk and Audit Consulting Firm

The Situation

A risk-focused internal audit and consulting firm serving municipalities, schools, and nonprofits had outgrown its existing SQL Server setup. Their client base and contract volume were growing, but their technology stack could not support the modern analytics and compliance insights they needed to deliver. Key challenges included:

  • No scalable data warehouse capable of supporting analytics across multiple public-sector clients simultaneously
  • No way to attribute and pass through Snowflake compute costs at the individual client level
  • Inability to compete for contracts requiring a modern analytics platform

What We Did

Deployed a Snowflake Rapid Start across seven phases, covering roles, access controls, database structures, and security configuration

  • Implemented Snowflake OpenFlow as the native extract-and-load solution, avoiding additional AWS infrastructure
  • Built Snowflake-native dbt for modeling, with example pipelines and patterns the client could extend independently
  • Designed a multi-client pipeline architecture that tags and allocates Snowflake compute costs at the individual client level, enabling direct pass-through billing
  • Integrated Entra/Office 365 for single sign-on authentication
  • Delivered full enablement and handoff so the client's team could independently manage and extend the platform

Results

Implementation completed in approximately one month, compared to an estimated three to four months if the client had built it themselves

  • Client independently configured three to four additional client pipelines using the provided patterns after go-live
  • Snowflake consumption grew enough from a new internal practice to justify moving from a Pay-Go to a capacity agreement

What This Unlocks

For consulting firms or managed services providers that deliver analytics to multiple downstream clients, this engagement demonstrates how Snowflake can be architected to support multi-tenant data products with granular, client-level cost transparency. The OpenFlow and native dbt patterns are directly reusable for any organization looking to build a Snowflake-native stack without additional ETL tooling.

Team

Led by a senior data architect serving as delivery lead, supported by a solutions architect and a senior data engineer handling primary implementation.
