Snowflake, Matillion, and Power BI Remediation for Government Energy Corporation SAP Migration

The Situation

A Queensland Government-owned energy corporation was mid-way through a major SAP migration from on-premise to cloud when a critical gap emerged: no internal expertise to validate or remediate the Matillion data pipelines feeding Snowflake and downstream Power BI dashboards. A failure here would directly impact government reporting. Key challenges included:

  • 127 Matillion tables ingesting SAP data into Snowflake with unknown exposure to schema changes from the migration
  • 120+ Power BI report pages dependent on that data, including critical government dashboards
  • No internal documentation of existing pipeline behavior
  • A tight deadline tied to the SAP go-live with no tolerance for production issues
  • A complex multi-party delivery structure involving the energy corporation, an SAP partner, and InterWorks

What We Did

Conducted a two-week discovery phase to assess Matillion pipeline exposure to SAP schema changes and deliver a proof of concept for remediation

  • Developed a comprehensive seven-phase test plan covering connectivity, pipeline, schema, data integrity, Snowflake objects, incremental load behavior, and Power BI testing
  • Remediated 17 of 127 Matillion tables impacted by SAP schema changes
  • Analyzed and validated 35 Snowflake presentation layer objects
  • Tested 120+ Power BI report pages end-to-end
  • Ran full regression testing against production systems
  • Identified and documented a Matillion bug preventing certain operations, with a workaround delivered for future use
  • Delivered a dedicated post-launch support period, including out-of-scope Matillion instance upgrade support when another service provider could not complete validation
  • Maintained structured daily stand-ups, Smartsheets RAID tracking, and stakeholder-facing test evidence documentation throughout

Results

Zero production issues on day one of go-live specific to the Matillion and Snowflake remediation scope

  • UAT completed within 24 hours of presenting test evidence
  • Matillion bug identified, documented, and resolved
  • Dedicated post-launch support period completed with no escalations
