Snowflake Data Warehouse for EV Charging Network and B2B Data Exchange

The Situation

A Volkswagen Group subsidiary building one of the largest electric vehicle charging networks in the US had established a strong analytics foundation on AWS and Tableau from day one. As their network grew, a new strategic opportunity emerged: the data being generated by charging hardware vendors was not just operationally valuable — it was potentially valuable to external organizations as well. Enabling private B2B data exchanges required a more modern, scalable data warehousing solution than their existing setup could support. Key challenges included:

  • Growing data volumes from hardware vendors across a rapidly expanding national charging network
  • No cloud data warehouse capable of supporting scalable data acquisition, storage, and distribution
  • A need to enable B2B data sharing with external partners without manual effort or infrastructure overhead
  • An existing Tableau environment that needed to perform better as data volumes increased

What We Did

Recommended and implemented Snowflake as the cloud data warehouse, chosen for its native integration with AWS and Tableau and its ability to scale with data growth

  • Designed a data architecture supporting both internal analytics and external B2B data exchange use cases
  • Integrated Snowflake into the existing AWS and Tableau stack to improve query performance across growing datasets
  • Enabled the foundation for private business-to-business data exchanges with external partners and hardware vendors

Results

  • Cloud data warehouse in place supporting a rapidly scaling national network
  • B2B data exchange capability established, opening new commercial and partnership opportunities
  • Tableau analytics performance improved as data volumes continued to grow
  • Analytics became a daily operational tool embedded across the organization's business development activities

What This Unlocks

For infrastructure or network businesses generating operational data that has value beyond internal reporting, this engagement demonstrates how Snowflake can serve as both a performance layer for existing analytics and a foundation for external data sharing. The architecture is directly applicable to any organization looking to monetize or distribute operational data to partners or customers.
