Sigma Analytics and Self-Service Financial Reporting for a Fintech Company

The Situation

A privately held fintech company serving professional services firms had outgrown its existing reporting stack. Despite a significant analytics investment, the organization was running on a fragile, Excel-heavy process that created bottlenecks, limited visibility, and left a previously adopted BI platform (Tableau) largely underutilized.

  • Financial reporting across payments, subscriptions, and client cohorts depended on a small number of manually assembled Excel files, each spawning dozens of stakeholder-specific variants.
  • A single data scientist served as the bottleneck for all data requests spanning analytics, finance, and accounting teams.
  • The company had adopted Sigma following an initial proof of concept but lacked the internal expertise to productionalize it into a governed, production-ready environment.
  • The organization was building out its Snowflake environment in parallel, a common pattern for companies modernizing their full data stack at once.

What We Did

InterWorks productionalized the client's Sigma proof of concept and built a governed analytics foundation capable of supporting ongoing self-service reporting across finance and accounting functions.

  • Developed production dashboards covering net spread by payment processor, payments volume across products and practice areas, client cohort analysis, and an automated replacement for a manual Excel-based payment processor reporting workflow.
  • Advised on the construction of a library of governed data models in Sigma to give finance and accounting teams governed, structured data access without routing every request through a central analyst.
  • Configured the full Sigma environment including workspaces, workbook tagging, security settings, user management, and a custom client brand theme.
  • Delivered weekly Sigma enablement sessions covering data modeling, governance, licensing, and workspace best practices, supplemented by standing office hours for hands-on guidance and live data model walkthroughs.
  • Facilitated knowledge transfer to the client's designated internal Sigma owners, positioning them to manage and extend the environment independently.
  • Supported the client in engaging directly with Sigma to help them unlock advanced analytics tooling they wanted to use, ensuring the team could produce workbooks faster and with greater confidence.

Results

InterWorks delivered a functioning, governed Sigma environment that eliminated manual reporting overhead and established a durable self-service foundation, meeting the client where they were and guiding them from a general sense of what they wanted to build to a prioritized, deliverable-ready roadmap.

  • Key dashboards delivered and productionalized, with a clear roadmap in place for expanding coverage as the upstream data environment continues to mature.
  • Manual Excel-based payment processor reporting automated into Sigma across structured tabs, eliminating recurring extract-and-calculate cycles for the accounting team.
  • Approximately 20 to 25 governed data models deployed, enabling self-service data access for the finance and analytics teams without a central analyst dependency.
  • Internal Sigma ownership transferred to designated client team members, supported by hands-on enablement and documentation.
  • Client expressed interest in introducing Sigma to the broader enterprise due to the success of this engagement.

What This Unlocks

For fintech companies ready to move beyond Excel-heavy reporting or legacy BI and get real value from Sigma, this engagement shows what's possible when the right expertise is applied from day one. InterWorks brings the structure, governance, and enablement to turn a proof of concept into a production-ready analytics environment — and the experience to help organizations prioritize and sequence the work in a way that works best for them. For teams managing complex payment and subscription data across multiple products and business lines, this is what a strong Sigma foundation looks like in practice.

Team

InterWorks' analytics consultants handled all dashboard development, data modeling, and client-facing enablement, supported by a delivery lead who managed sprint structure, stakeholder communications, and project tooling, and a solutions director who shaped the engagement scope.
