Data Catalog and Governance Implementation on Snowflake for Major Fiber Optic Provider

The Situation

A German telecommunications company connecting rural areas with fiber optic infrastructure had built a modern cloud data stack — Snowflake, dbt, and Qlik — as part of a multi-year cloud modernization program. But with a portfolio of over 13,000 dashboards and multiple business units operating independently, a new problem had emerged: no one could reliably find, trust, or understand the data assets that existed. Key challenges included:

  • No single access point for discovering available reports, datasets, and data products across the organization
  • No data lineage visibility — users could not trace where data originated or how it flowed through the platform
  • Conflicting KPI definitions across business units with no governance framework to resolve them
  • Hidden Snowflake permission issues and configuration gaps the organization was unaware of
  • A need to roll out data governance practices to over 200 active data workers across 2,000 employees

What We Did

Conducted a strategic advisory and architecture phase to assess data governance maturity and define how Atlan should integrate with the existing Snowflake, dbt, Qlik, and Azure Data Factory stack

  • Architected and configured the Atlan data catalog implementation, establishing full integration across the data platform
  • Identified and resolved numerous Snowflake permission issues and platform configuration gaps uncovered during implementation
  • Built business glossaries with KPI definitions across organizational domains, surfacing and resolving conflicting definitions held by different teams
  • Developed and delivered a persona-based training program for data workers across all domains
  • Coordinated active rollout to 200+ data workers, driving adoption and documentation practices across business units
  • Scoped custom connector requirements for additional systems not covered by standard Atlan integrations

Results

Full data lineage now visible end-to-end, from dashboard to source table and individual column level

  • 13,300 dashboards catalogued and accessible through a single governed access point
  • Hidden Snowflake platform permission issues identified and resolved — issues the organization did not know existed
  • KPI definition inconsistencies surfaced and documented across business units, creating organizational awareness and a path to alignment
  • Decision-making time reduced by up to 24 hours per decision where users can now self-serve lineage and context rather than querying data engineers
  • 200+ active data workers onboarded to the platform with strong community adoption

What This Unlocks

For organizations that have invested in a modern Snowflake-based data stack but are struggling with data discoverability, conflicting definitions, or governance gaps, this engagement demonstrates how a structured data catalog implementation can surface hidden platform issues, align teams on a single source of truth, and measurably accelerate decision-making. The Atlan integration patterns for Snowflake, dbt, and Qlik are directly reusable for similar environments.

Team

Led by a strategy director serving as overall engagement lead, supported by a principal consultant as senior technical delivery lead, a senior data architect leading architecture design, an analytics architect handling platform integrations, a senior analytics consultant coordinating the rollout across business units, and a strategy consultant leading training design and delivery.
