CHALLENGE:

App Annie is a quickly growing, innovative startup that provides intelligence-based analytics on app store data. App developers and publishers receive considerable value and decision support from App Annie’s detailed, customizable views of app store metrics. App Annie has been providing this data to its customers in raw form. Upon discovering the power of Tableau, App Annie realized they could enhance the value of their data by pairing it with interactive Tableau visualizations of that data. This entailed delivering tailored Tableau workbooks customized to each customer’s needs.

The challenge is that delivering tailored, customized datasets and workbooks to App Annie’s many customers takes time. A lot of time. App Annie wished to streamline the delivery process for getting these new packaged Tableau workbooks to its customers.

SOLUTION:

App Annie turned to InterWorks, Tableau’s leading services partner, to restructure their entire Tableau workbook delivery process. The first challenge: each customer receives a tailored workbook, yet the “who gets what” information resides in a third-party CRM. InterWorks began by creating new extract, transform and load (ETL) processes to bring this CRM data together with the App Annie Intelligence data. They then revamped and simplified the process by which App Annie analysts produce the customized packaged workbooks for their customers. Customers now receive both their raw data and Tableau packaged workbooks with tailored dashboards and customized datasets.

RESULTS:

While the project is still ongoing, App Annie experienced several immediate improvements. Most notably, the new delivery system implemented by InterWorks allows analysts to roll out deliveries with greater speed and on a larger scale. This helped App Annie make the critical jump from delivering a few workbooks by hand to scaling their entire customer base with ease. The delivery process has been cut from weeks to hours and has reduced the risk of human error. Additionally, InterWorks enabled App Annie to track customer usage metrics across workbooks within Tableau Desktop. All of this work has empowered both App Annie and their customers to access their data faster and easier, allowing for better insight. These initial successes have encouraged App Annie and InterWorks to explore further opportunities for improvement as App Annie continues to grow.
