There is a very handy, yet little known utility that most people do not even realize is bundled with their WIFI enabled Blackberry. The utility is called “Wifi Tools” and has been helpful to me more times than I can count. If you have a WIFI enabled Blackberry, you access this menu by going to Manage Connections, Wifi Options, then pressing the menu button and choosing Wifi Tools. Here are some of the nifty things you can do with this utility:
Wifi Diagnostics – Will show your current profile, SSID, the MAC address of the access point you’re connected to, security type, the IP address assigned to your device, signal level, connection data speed, and the current status. It will also show you the details of a VPN if you are connected, as well as check marks in boxes to indicate whether or not you are connected to the Enterprise Server and the Blackberry Infrastructure. By going to menu and then Options, you can choose the Advanced view, which will show you even more details, such as DNS servers and the like. You will also notice that you can press the menu button and choose to email or PIN message the report to any address you choose.
Site Survey – This option will show you a more detailed view of any wireless networks in range, including the MAC address of the access point.
DNS Lookup – Here you can type in the name of a site and get the IP address of the host.
Ping – You can ping objects by either IP address or Name here.
There you have it. The next time you are troubleshooting wireless networks, access points, or DNS issues, leave the laptop and the bag and break out the Blackberry!
