Pitchfork, one of the most well-known online music review sites, just released their “Top 50 Albums of the Year” list for 2015. They do a great job listing out each album, sharing some background info and a track from each album along the way. Still, this got me thinking: Why not take this same list and look at it a little differently using Tableau? Maybe I could condense all that information into one easy-to-navigate dashboard.
Below is the end result. Using data scraped from Pitchfork’s website, I listed out the same 50 albums ordered by release date. You’ll notice bars of varying lengths. Those denote an album’s ranking. To see which album dropped when and by whom, simply click on the orange dot of your choosing. This will populate the album name, artist name and specific Pitchfork rank in the top-right corner. If you hover over that info, additional background info will appear. On the left, you’ll notice an embedded Spotify player featuring a track from the highlighted album. Feel free to play away and get a taste of each album for yourself. There’s also a search bar at the top-right that allows you to search for a specific artist in case you’re curious.
I hope you enjoy the viz and discover some great new music while you’re at it. I know I did.
