I recently caught a little snippet of Murray’s last few games winning Wimbledon in 2013; and it got me all excited for 2015’s possibilities, no pressure Andy!
It’s Wimbledon Season again!
I was interested in how dominant Murray was during the Final, as sometimes stats and feeling are a long way apart, especially when emotion is involved. I’m sure you’ll all remember the tension and emotion of the 2013 Wimbledon Final! So, I went hunting and found a point by point, and stroke by stroke data set. (thank you Tennis Abstract) This is what I found:
Interesting parts for me were:
- How dominant Murray was in the AD game (see balance of power tab);
- How Djokovic let Murray back into the 2nd set with 2 double faults in game 7 (your go tab);
- How both payers won exactly the same % of points off second serve at 43.2% (points won on serve tab);
- How there were 11 break of serves in the 32 games with 7 going to Murray (your go tab).
So judging from this I’m pretty confident he can do it again. Go Murray!! For Tableau Users – This data set was a little messy for use in Tableau so I have had to write quite a few calculations to get this to work including a few Tableau version 9 LOD calcs. Feel free to download it and pull it apart…or better yet improve it and let me know how you get on!
