It’s that time of year again. The days are getting shorter, the weather is getting cooler and the end of Daylight Savings Time is right around the corner. Essentially, for people like me, life is going to suck until summer comes back around. But, there is something to look forward to during the season of cold weather and flight delays – NHL hockey.
Being a hockey fan and a semi-regular traveler, when the NHL released the 2014-2015 regular season schedule, I decided to take that data and create one of my first visualizations in Tableau. The goal was to track what teams are playing on any given day and where the games were being played. Now that I’m traveling, a goal of mine is to watch a game at every NHL arena and MLB stadium. This will most certainly help me plan my trips a bit more effectively.
The first viz has a calendar with a drop-down menu to choose the month you’re interested in. Selecting a date filters the dashboard to show the list of scheduled games for that day with the map displaying the locations of the games based on home teams. Unfortunately, this doesn’t take into account locations of this year’s outdoor games like the Winter Classic. I hope you enjoy it!
