Superbowl Showdown: Win/Loss History Visualization

As the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare to face each other in Dallas to decide who will take home the Vince Lombardi trophy, I thought it would be fun to look back in history at the other times these teams have faced off.

About this Superbowl Visualization

This viz charts the outcome of every Packers v Steelers game from 1936 (when the Steelers were known as the Pirates) to the last time they faced each other in 2009. The games are broken out into decades on the timeline with a red line across each decade to indicate the average point spread (difference between winning and losing score) for each decade.

Clicking a game in the timeline will show the games final score in the Scoreboard view and the cumulative wins for each team in the decade the game was played. Looking at the entire history of games played between these teams the Packers seem to have an edge going into the Superbowl. Across the decades the point spread between these teams gets smaller and smaller.

Sunday’s game promises to be great one!
