BitLocker/TPM Lockout

BitLocker/TPM Lockout

I am not sure if this problem has come up with anyone before, but I recently encountered the problem. Knowing that a fair amount of clients use BitLocker encryption, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to show my findings – in case it happens to someone else.

Problem

Laptop/Desktop keeps requesting Bitlocker key every time the device boots up.

Solution

  1. Boot to Repair CD
  2. Turn OFF TPM Security
  3. Restore Master Boot Record
  4. Restart computer and run BitLocker encryption

Note: Do not restore TPM security as soon as your Master Boot Record is finished. Allow BitLocker to reactivate it once the computer restarts and you begin the encryption process. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate. I am not sure if the problem has been encountered with Windows 8 or 8.1.

I have not figured out why the problem happened, but this should fix it if it happens to someone else!
